One of the most common equipment questions in vivarium planning is whether an animal transfer station or a biosafety cabinet is needed for a specific animal handling procedure. These are not interchangeable, and selecting the wrong type has significant biosafety implications.

Never use an animal transfer station as a substitute for a biosafety cabinet when working with animals infected with biological agents, toxins, or any material requiring BSL-2 or higher containment. Vivarium equipment encompasses all the specialized tools, enclosures, workstations, and support systems used to house, handle, and care for laboratory animals in research facilities. This includes animal transfer stations, animal biosafety cabinets, IVC racks and cage systems, cage washers and sterilizers, feed and bedding dispensing equipment, transport carts and racks, ventilated workstations, restrainers, and surgical support equipment – covering the complete workflow of an IACUC-regulated animal research facility.
An animal transfer station (ATS) is a ventilated HEPA-filtered enclosure used for transferring laboratory animals between cages, protecting animals from environmental contamination and handlers from animal allergens. Unlike a biosafety cabinet, an animal transfer station is not NSF/ANSI 49 certified and does not provide the level of personnel protection required for work with infectious biological agents. An ATS is appropriate for routine cage changes with healthy, non-infected animals. Work involving infected animals or biological agents at BSL-2 or higher requires a certified animal biosafety cabinet.
A fully equipped vivarium typically requires animal housing (IVC racks or static cages), cage washers and autoclaves for decontamination, animal transfer stations or BSCs for safe animal handling, feed and bedding dispensing equipment, transport carts and racks, ventilated workstations for procedure areas, and temperature and environmental monitoring systems. Surgical facilities require appropriate lighting, exam tables, anesthesia systems, and OR boom equipment. The specific requirements depend on the species housed, biosafety level, and institutional IACUC protocols.
